By October 2024, three Vietnamese companies—Mai Vinh Rubber Trading Service Production Co. Ltd, Viet Sing Joint Stock Company, and Thien Hung Production Trading Service Co. Ltd.— had successfully exported multiple shipments of natural rubber assessed by CMO and their clients as compliant with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

The EUDR, which came into force on June 29, 2023, aims to combat global deforestation driven by the expansion of agricultural land linked to the production of key commodities  such as cattle, wood, cocoa, soy, palm oil, coffee, and natural rubber. Under the regulation, any operator or trader placing these commodities on the EU market must provide evidence that their products do not originate from recently deforested land or contribute to forest degradation. The EUDR requirements will be mandatory from December 30, 2025, for large enterprises and from June 30, 2026, for smaller enterprises.

To assist Vietnamese companies in meeting these stringent requirements, Weber & Schaer Group (Germany) collaborated with the international CMO Group to implement the company’s EUDR compliance solution with three pioneering enterprises: Mai Vinh, Viet Sing, and Thien Hung.  Leveraging CMO’s deep forestry and certification expertise, the implementation of in-field compliance checks and their advanced software solutions, Empower and Tracer were instrumental in ensuring robust due diligence, supply chain management, and traceability (www.cmogroup.io).

Starting in November 2023, CMO conducted preliminary surveys of rubber smallholders. From March 2024, the company began collecting data and creating digital maps based on geographical coordinates (polygons). The comprehensive risk assessment of the rubber plantations was based on EUDR’s seven core principles:

  • Land tenure and management rights
  • Conserving biodiversity, soil, and water
  • Responsible management planning and operations
  • Recognition and respect of customary and community rights
  • Respect for labour rights and human rights
  • Protection of the rights of indigenous peoples
  • Compliance with tax laws, anti-corruption measures, and trade regulations

Field data was collected using CMO’s Empower application which facilitates the onboarding of smallholders, the mapping of plots, and assessment of compliance. In October 2024, CMO supported the three companies in conducting EUDR compliance assessments of smallholders themselves, enabling them to meet EUDR requirements. CMO’s comprehensive solution not only ensures EUDR compliance but also enhances sustainable supply chain management, paving the way for seamless progress towards FSC™ certification.

CMO Vietnam is continuing its support for Mai Vinh, Viet Sing, and Thien Hung to scale up their EUDR-compliant production, meeting customer requirements not only in Europe but also in other markets such as China, India, and the United States.
